SUMMARY
Recent history says things don't bode well for a third Melbourne win on the trot.

The Demons haven't beaten the Western Bulldogs since round 19, 2007, losing all four clashes between the two teams since then.

But after Dean Bailey's young team's 27-point win over Richmond on Saturday, they suddenly really do look like a team on the rise.

Melbourne's forward pressure, often criticised during their up-and-down season so far, was at its best yet against the Tigers, and the return of Mark Jamar from a knee injury meant the competition's most dominant ruck-rover pairing (Jamar and Brent Moloney) was reunited at the centre bounce.

The Bulldogs have won their past two, but a 22-point win over the youth-laden Gold Coast line-up was hardly convincing for a team whose fans had premiership aspirations at season's beginning.

On the plus side, some of the Bulldogs' better players have been red-hot over the past two weeks, particularly skipper Matthew Boyd and fellow midfielders Ryan Griffen and Daniel Cross.

The return of Adam Cooney is also important for the Dogs' finals hopes.

The Brownlow medallist was used as a sub against Adelaide a fortnight ago before getting through a full match and booting three goals against the Suns.

Let's hope he can continue to manage that troublesome knee and play some of his trademark team-lifting football in the run-up to September.

With both teams still in the hunt for one of the last two spots in the eight, expect a willing and even contest.
